REP. JENKINS STATEMENT ON TAX CUTS & JOBS ACT
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) issued the following statement today on the House and Senate agreement on the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act:
“The work the House and Senate have done over the past weeks has strengthened this legislation. The Tax Cuts & Jobs Act preserves important West Virginia priorities, including the mortgage interest deduction, the historic tax credit and the medical expenses deduction. I personally advocated for West Virginia’s priorities and worked with leadership to make sure they were included in the final bill. I’ve made the conference report and a summary available on my website so West Virginians can join me in carefully reviewing the bill before next week’s vote,” Rep. Jenkins said.
The conference report and a two-page summary are available on Rep. Jenkins’ website at https://evanjenkins.house.gov/issues/tax-reform.
Under this bill, a family of four earning the median family income of $73,000 will receive a tax cut of $2,059.
It also protects coal jobs by repealing the alternative minimum tax, which prevents investment in new equipment for mines.
Additionally, it preserves critical deductions and credits, including:
- Medical expense deductions
- Historic tax credits
- Tax-free graduate school tuition waivers
- Student loan interest deductions
- Mortgage interest deductions
- State and local tax deductions
- Deductions for teachers buying classroom supplies
- Adoption tax credits.
