House passes bills to rein in IRS, create taxpayer bill of rights
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) marked Tax Day by supporting a series of bills passed by the House today to bring accountability back to the Internal Revenue Service and create a taxpayer bill of rights.
The bills include:
- H.R. 1058, the Taxpayer Bill of Rights Act, which would require the IRS commissioner to ensure that IRS employees follow a list of taxpayer rights.
- H.R. 1152, the IRS Email Transparency Act, which would prohibit IRS employees from using personal email accounts to conduct official business.
- H.R. 1314, the Ensuring Tax Exempt Organizations the Right to Appeal Act, which would allow organizations to appeal an adverse determination by the IRS on their tax-exempt status.
“Tax Day serves as a yearly reminder of the high tax burden placed on Americans by the federal government. Today, we took action in the House to hold the IRS accountable for its actions and to make the agency answer to the American people for its decisions. By making the IRS more transparent and enforcing a list of taxpayer rights, we can hold the federal government accountable for how it spends taxpayers’ hard-earned dollars,” Rep. Jenkins said.
