REP. JENKINS: BLACK LUNG BENEFITS ARE PROTECTED
WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) announced today that the Byrd amendment and its black lung benefits are protected as Congress considers the American Health Care Act.
“I am carefully reviewing the American Health Care Act to decide if it is in the best interests of West Virginians. After discussing with committees, I am proud to share that the Byrd amendment is protected and this bill does not change the eligibility presumption for black lung benefits. Since coming to Congress, I have fought to protect this program by introducing legislation and advocating to House leaders. Our miners and their widows deserve these critical benefits, and I will continue to fight for them,” Rep. Jenkins said.
Rep. Jenkins has twice introduced a resolution to reaffirm Congress’ commitment to preserving and protecting black lung benefits and the Byrd amendment as healthcare reform is drafted.
He is also an original cosponsor of legislation introduced by Rep. Morgan Griffith (R-Va.) to preserve the Byrd amendment and the black lung benefits program.
