REP. JENKINS ANNOUNCES $500K GRANT FOR MARSHALL UNIVERSITY

March 8, 2016
Press Release
Research project will also promote science education in rural schools

WASHINGTON – U.S. Representative Evan Jenkins (R-W.Va.) announced today that Marshall University has received a grant of more than $500,000 to study the effects of exposure to anti-microbial products. The grant will also expand science education in elementary schools throughout rural West Virginia and promote careers in science and technology.

The National Science Foundation awarded the $508,708 grant to the Marshall University Research Corporation to support this research project.

“Marshall University continues to lead the way in innovative medical research, and this grant will allow the university to expand its connections to rural schools throughout West Virginia. Elementary students will be able to learn about the sciences from Marshall undergraduates and see the possibilities that science and technology offer for future careers. I am proud to support the great work of Marshall University and congratulate their faculty on this important grant,” Rep. Jenkins said.

“Once again, Marshall researchers are exploring some of today’s most important scientific questions. This project will address the responses of brain cells to antibacterial substances found in everything from wound dressings to food containers, toys, toothbrushes, clothing, cosmetics and household appliances. As part of this project, our undergraduate students also will be taking science to elementary schools throughout rural West Virginia to help children learn scientific concepts in fun, interactive ways. I salute the principal investigator on this grant, Dr. Nadja Spitzer. She is one of our leading scientists and truly exemplifies the role of teacher-scholar,” Marshall University President Jerome Gilbert said.
