WSAZ: Ground breaking ceremony held for runway repair at Yeager Airport

KANAWHA COUNTY, W. Va. (WSAZ) -- Construction of Runway 5 Safety area is now underway after Thursday morning’s groundbreaking ceremony.

The ceremony hosted several of West Virginia’s congressional representatives including U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and Senator Joe Manchin, Congressman Evan Jenkins and a representative from the office of Congressman Alex Mooney.

Orders Construction Company is working on the project along with dozen of workers from Yeager Airport.
The Engineered Materials Arresting System or EMAS will be deliver within the year.

A standard EMAS installation can stop an aircraft from overrunning the runway at approximately 80 miles per hour.

In August, the airport received a federal grant for $8 million to rebuild that part of the runway.
This after the EMAS blocks were destroyed in the slip. It happened in March 2015.
